250 years ago today, the world was about to turn upside down.

April 16, 1775, the Thirteen Colonies were a powder keg, and the British government held the flame. “Liberty or Death” and “No Taxation Without Representation” weren’t catchy slogans. They were reality. Boston was under martial law, the threat of imprisonment was real, justice was suspended, arms and weapons were seized… It was the same, sad story that had played out in Scotland and Ireland.

I have been listening to the audiobook “Rise to Rebellion” by Jeff Shaara. It details the events and people who played a part in the early days of the American Revolution. My blood boils when I hear of the arrogance and tyranny of the British aristocracy and military. But I am also awed by the courage of the American patriots.

What they dared to dream was impossible. What they were willing to die for was implausible. What they stood and fought for was incredible.

For 250 years, the flame of liberty has shown, sometimes bright, sometimes dim, but always there. That light wouldn’t be shining today if it wasn’t for the Sons of Liberty and the events of 250 years ago. It wouldn’t be shining today if it wasn’t for the courage and sacrifice of other sons and daughters of liberty who came later.

So imagine you’re there, April 16, 1775. The match is about to be struck. What would you do?
