By David Gibson

Most of us can rattle off Psalm 23 with little thought. But what does it actually mean? What is the Lord teaching us about the Good Shepherd in this short, but powerful psalm?

Dividing the psalm into three main sections, pastor and author David Gibson unpacks the relationship of the sheep and shepherd, the traveler and companion, and the guest and host. As the layers are peeled back, you will be awed by the depth of Psalm 23 and the rich goodness of God.

Pros: I like to think I have a fairly good understanding of Psalm 23, but this book was next level. I learned so much and will never think of this psalm in the same way again. There were so many good points that have stuck with me. I wish the author could do this with all of the Psalms!

Cons: I tried to use this as a brief morning devotional, but that wasn’t possible. I wish the book had shorter chapters or more sections. It’s a lot to process – especially when the coffee hasn’t kicked in yet.

Bottom Line: Learn the true meaning of Psalm 23 – beyond the rote funeral recitations.
