Broderick Cosgrove is deep undercover in Cincinnati, trying to infiltrate a gang of counterfeiters. But his deep loyalty to his work as a Secret Service agent is tested when his investigation leads him to Colonel Plane, the grandfather and caregiver of his former fiancee, Theresa. Though he had broken off their engagement years ago to protect her, his heart is unable to forget – especially when he realizes the level of danger she is in.
Theresa Plane’s time with her grandfather is drawing to a close. Recently engaged, she is more concerned with trying to find ways to pay off her grandfather’s creditors than planning her upcoming wedding. When a debt collector turns violent, Theresa digs in her heels, determined to fight for her grandfather and her home, no matter what her current fiance and ex-fiance have to say. But what if the danger is closer than she realizes? Will her determination be her own undoing?
Pros: I recently re-read this book and it was even better than I remembered. It contains the perfect balance of suspense, humor, and romance. I love the colorful characters, the historical details, and the naturally woven deep themes. Honestly, there isn’t enough good historical suspense like this out there.
Cons: *Crickets*
Bottom Line: Masterfully written historical suspense set in 1880s Cincinnati, with a five star cast of Secret Service agents, counterfeiters, and maybe-not-so-innocent bystanders.
