Timeless Series Book 5
By Gabrielle Meyer
Kathryn lives simultaneously in 1888 and 1938. As a timecrosser, she has the unique gift to live in two different eras. When she turns 25, she’ll have to choose which life to live and which one to forfeit. But if she changes history, she will automatically lose that life – and could send the world reeling at the consequences of her actions.
In 1888, Kathryn is shocked when her younger sister, Mary, leaves her family’s London townhouse in the middle of the night. Her parents refuse to talk about what happened, and all Kathryn can glean from her sister, now living in the infamous Whitechapel district, is that Mary had uncovered a scandalous secret that had placed her and the family in danger. With her family on edge, the only person Kathryn can trust is her childhood friend, Austen. But Austen has his own reasons for not wanting to help her.
Kathryn loves her “modern life” fifty years into the future in 1938. As an American citizen temporarily living in London with her parents, the threat of war with Germany casts a shadow, but it can’t dampen her enthusiasm for bringing history to life as a guest curator at the London Museum. But when Kathryn is tasked with putting together a brand new exhibit on the unsolved Jack the Ripper case, she is horrified to learn that the last victim is her younger sister, Mary. Could Mary’s secret in 1888 provide the crucial evidence to uncover the identity of Jack the Ripper? Kathryn has always known she should never try to change history, but she can’t let her sister be murdered. Does she dare use her timecrossing abilities to save her sister, or is it better to let history play out the way it was always meant to be?
Cons: I was a little leery when things took a Freemason turn. I almost started doing my own research into the Freemason connection to Jack the Ripper, but I didn’t want to spoil the story, so I just waited for the Author’s Note at the end which explained everything quite well. Honestly, this series is so well written, I’ve forgotten I’m reading speculative historical fiction and the author is allowed to play with conspiracy theories. In the end, it was all good, I was just thrown for a loop temporarily.
Pros: Oh my goodness, this is one of those books where you want to scream at the characters your opinion. The suspense was perfect. And just when you think you’ve seen it all in the Timeless series, the author gives you a whole new angle. (When the time difference is only 50 years, characters can overlap. What can go wrong?!?!?!?!? *insert panicked scream*)
The romance was so good, the story was absolutely heart-wrenching, and I appreciated how well the author used both 1888 and 1938 so effectively together. With the next-level plot in this book, I am legit scared to read book 6. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to handle it!
The Bottom Line: Go read the Timeless series.
